The Kenya Gem and Jewellery Trade Fair (KGJF)was a first of its kind in Kenya and it brought together various women, men and youth groups, local, regional and international traders in gemstones and gold to the country.
The aim of the fair, which will be held annually, is to position Kenya as the regional hub for minerals value addition and trading.
Kenya is a uniquely positioned country in terms of minerals and natural resources. Kenya boasts the availability of over 10 different precious coloured gemstones, namely: Ruby, Tsavorite, Yellow Tourmaline, Green Tourmaline, Red Garnet, Colour Change Garnet, Aquamarine, Amethyst, Iolite and Blue Sapphire.
A majority of these gemstones are exported out of Kenya for processing and value addition and the miners and traders of these stones, travel to different countries to attend trade shows to look for business markets for their minerals. Given the Kenyan Minerals in the global industry, it is only natural that Kenya creates an opportunity for global industry stakeholders to travel to source to acquire and purchase these mineral products from local industry stakeholders.
AWEIK also focuses on providing business development services to its members by facilitating improved access to markets through organizing and participating in local and international fairs and exhibitions. Hence the birth of the Kenya Gem and Jewellery Fair.
